Physical Strength and Emotional Strength

“Moving me down the highway, rolling me down the highway.  Moving ahead so life won’t pass me by.”  Words courtesy of Jim Croce, taken tragically in the prime of his career.
“Like the whippoorwill and the baby’s cry I’ve got a song.”
Yes, music moves me – oldies music.  Maybe it’s my generational attachment or maybe it’s my way of holding on to the younger days.
“They can change their minds but they can’t change me.”  Now there’s a statement!  Changing minds is something I try to accomplish everyday.  Holding steadfast to my beliefs, dreams and desires the mettle that may become dented but will never fail under even the most arduous stress.  We are burnished everyday by the refining fire of life.  We may not realize but we are strengthened each day.  A new strand of tensile strength added.
In order to recognize strength we must acknowledge weakness.  This admission should not adversely impact us.  The inverse should occur; capitalizing on every opportunity to enhance our foundation.  Buttresses support us, enabling us to remain upright even in the most violent storm.
We don’t need crisis to build emotional and psychological muscles.  Short bursts of exercise can be more effective because emotional muscle isn’t torn as badly and can recover quickly.
One of the things those of us in active transition forsake is physical strength.  We need to transfer physical strength to emotional and psychological strength.  I’m learning how to do that and do it timely.  It’s not easy.  It’s challenging and sometimes frustrating.  But as I mature (read “age”) I’m learning that physical strength is fleeting and there will always be someone physically stronger.
How are you faring in that department?  Do you have successes and cautions to share?  If so, don’t be shy.  We need to share teachable moments.  It’s part of being an active part of this community.
Have a wonderfully strengthening day.

Love and hugs, Nikki DiCaro
